HOW IT WORKS.
If inflation is at 3% per year,fees at 1% per year and the market gives you an average return of 8% per year,the difference will be 4%.
This means that you can withdraw 4% of your total investment capital each year without risking your capital to go away during your lifetime.
According to the 4% rule,you can call yourself financially free when you have enough capital to cover all your annual expenses X25 times.
So if you calculate your annual expenses and multiply it with 25,you'll get the number that you need to call yourself financially free.
Example.
Monthly expenses:2.500$
2500$x12 =30.000$/year
30.000$x25=750.000$
So essentially,if your monthly expenses never go beyond 2500$,you need 750.000$ to be financially free with the 4% rule.
The 4%rule also assumes that you'll never earn a single cent outside of the stock market.
